Andrea Emerson LAC picture courage to be therapy services therapist and owner

Hi, I’m andrea emerson, M.A., LAC: Owner and Therapist

I believe that healing happens in the empathetic and authentic connection between two people. I empower my clients to be the experts on themselves and their experiences. Alongside my expertise in human growth and development, we can work together towards your goals. I utilize a multicultural lens embracing my clients’ individual identities and life experiences, and take a wellness approach to counseling by focusing on your strengths and utilizing them to foster holistic wellness in your life.

During our sessions, I won't impose any expectations or judgments on you about how you should act or what you should do, instead I’ll support you as you navigate your own journey. I provide a relaxed, safe, and nonjudgemental environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings and connect with yourself and your values more deeply. I am not afraid of humor or cursing. Bring your authentic self and I'll bring mine.

My mission

Every day I encounter resiliency, resourcefulness, strength, and courage inherent in every one of us. Effective therapy helps you tap into the growth potential already inside of you.

This process of the good life is not, I am convinced, a life for the faint-fainthearted. It involves the stretching and growing of becoming more and more of one’s potentialities. It involves the courage to be. It means launching oneself fully into the stream of life.
— Carl R. Rogers

The courage to be

My therapeutic philosophy is well summed up by this Carl Rogers quote. Growth is difficult and often scary. Therapy is a courageous act of self discovery, and luckily you don’t have to do it alone.

the role of the relationship

A person-centered psychotherapist aims to create an authentic and empathetic environment that enables you to encounter your inner self, gain insight and grow.

My Approach

I am a person-centered psychotherapist. The three main components of person-centered psychotherapy are: unconditional positive regard toward the client, accurate empathy, and congruence.

Accurate Empathy

This is the ability for the therapist to accurately understand your experience so that you can feel heard, validated, and known. These empathetic encounters can provide healing and insight.

Congruence

Otherwise known as genuineness and authenticity. Authentic and vulnerable human connection built on mutual understanding is a powerful tool for a person’s growth and development.

unconditional Postive Regard

This means showing unconditional support and acceptance towards my clients. In order for my clients to feel safe encountering themselves, they need a safe environment free of judgement.

Our sessions will be

  • Personalized

Our initial sessions will be dedicated to getting to know one another, assessing your needs, and creating a personalized plan to fit your unique needs and goals.

  • Collaborative

Therapy is a collaborative process. I foster autonomy in my clients by encouraging them to be the expert on themselves. I welcome your feedback and perspective on our work together.

  • Holistic

Holistic mental health addresses the whole person. This process integrates spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional forms of well-being. We will work together to deepen your understanding of self in these areas.

Free 15-minute consultation

This is our opportunity to start to get to know one another, get your questions answered, and decide if we’d be a good fit working together. You’ll want to make sure you’re in a private location where you will feel comfortable talking about personal matters.

Our first session

Our first session will be dedicated to assessing your unique needs, giving you some initial information about therapy, and creating your treatment plan.

The therapeutic process

There are risks and benefits to the therapeutic process. We often talk about uncomfortable issues in therapy and this may result in uncomfortable emotions. There are ups and downs in the treatment process. Client commitment and a strong relationship between client and therapist are two major contributing factors to an upwards trend in client progress and outcomes.
